Hey, everyone. Welcome to the another post, well if there even is anyone(I doubt that but.. if your here thanks) Today I will be talking about closed source vs open source software. Everyone (atleast in dev community) always says that everything should be open source, but in my opinion, not absolutly everything should. So what do I think should be open source? Well, alot of things but Ill give a few examples here: Operating system Communication form Now you might think, why should operating system be open source? Well, group of people tried to install fresh windows install, and then test out where was it sending data. And believe it or not, when they ran wireshark(the only program that modified the installation) they noticed that bunch of data were being sent to third parties. This is a thing you definetly don't want for you OS to do, and since its not open source you cant do anything about it. Ok, now about the communication form. Why should it be open source? Well if it isnt, it means you are not guaranteed that your messages will not be recieved by someone else than you, and the person you are trying to access and even if they are, you can verify that they will be open source, or you can even self host it if you are afraid of it. But not all software can be open source. And not only because someone was too lazy to fix that one bug which would be instantly noticed after becoming open source.. Its also because of monetization. Not everyone can live just off rich people's donations. Sometimes you just gotta sell the software(by this however I am not saying subscription services are good, and I do think they should be returned to their original form, therefore you pay once, and never agin) and if you publish the code of paid software, it kindof loses the point.
