Hello everyone! This post will be about subscribtion services. So, how would I define one of these? Subscribtion service is something you have to frequently renew, lets say every month or year. Personally, I hate subscribtions. Not all of them however, but most. So for exmple, having subscribtion for a game(atleast singleplayer) is stupid. Lets say I want to play a game, I launch it on my local device. But then the game starts saying I need to pay every month to play the game! And now what? Maybe the game is already gone from all stores.. and I just have no chance of getting the subscribtion, or I get some money, but a game but now I cant play it? I find that dumb. Its like the big stores saying: You can get the game, but we'll own it for you. Personally I love when I can just download a game from 2002, leave it on some hard drive for 8 years, and still play it. This obviously doesn't apply to all subscribtion services tho. Some of them requie a server hardware, which needs to be paid, people that work on updates, etc. For example 2b2t. A minecraft server ran by a single person that purely rans from VIP's. There, it makes sence, since if it wasnt a subscribtion, everyone would buy it once, and the server would simply run out of money. In this case its reasonable to have a subscribtion. This doesn't apply for adobe software as example however, because the servers used for the software aren't costing too much. Updates are also preety much never, and if they are they make the product worse, so in this case, subscribtion once agin doesn't make sence. Only positive thing about it is that you can still buy older, non subscribtion software from adobe, like photoshop 2013 etc. Sadly those are slowly running out, and soon there will no longer be any copies of these. So, what are the requirements to make a reasonable subscribtion service? I think its one of these - Heavy hardware required on the company's side - People in the company are currently working on it - The software requies connection to internet or similiar service - therefore cannot be ran anyway when those services are dead The end for now!
