Hello everyone! Today, I will try to cover choosing a linux distro. So, where can you start choosing? On the internet obviously, but its commonly tradeoff between stability and package up-to-date'ness. This means you eighter get new package, or your system is stable, and nothing breaks every 5s, or you can also take neither of these and go for cubesos or something.. anyway, why do systems break on new packages you may ask, and the answer is eighter unstable package(self explanatory) or something called package conflict. Package conflict So what is this, package conflict? Package conflict is simply when you have 2 nearly identical packages on the global package repository, and in this case one of them (the one currently installed, or atleast the current version of it) is essential. This way, when you update your system and the package manager finds this conflict, it commonly asks you to select one of 2+ variants of this package, but only one is correct. Basically, you are being chalenged to find the impostor between these packages, and select the non-impostor package. If you win it, you can have up-to-date system, but if you don't, you are being senteced to spending few hours in another boot drive, trying to fix everything from the chrooted enviroment. So, on the other hand, there are also stable distros, but only problem with them is they don't really get new updates, where the compiler might not be updated since c++07 and you have to install all the newest packages from directly the developer, or just wait... Knowing this, we might be able to decide for what use what distro to use! Lets try it out: Desktop pcs: Here it really depends on the user, so -> basic user: Stable, long release time distro bleeding edge user: Anything they currently want, can be both :D Embeded systems: Very stable distro Servers: Stable distro, not requied tho.. And, lets give these distros a name while at it! Theres thousands of different distros, but the main ones are: Stable: Debian(based) Unstable(new pkgs): Arch(based), Gentoo... Well anyway, that'd be it for today, hope everyone enjoyed!
